Rumor States Two New iPads With Be Released In January

A recent DigiTimes article reported that Apple will be unveiling two new versions of the iPad at iWorld/Macworld on Jan. 26, 2012.  These new models will both include a 9.7 inch screen (Just like the current iPad), but at least one will have a QxGA screen, which is 1536×2048 pixel resolution.

Also, one of the new models is said to have a 8 megapixel rear facing camera and the other will have a 5 megapixel camera.  The new battery being used in these tablets is supposedly a 14,000mAh battery which is the largest battery that we have seen on a tablet before.

Not too much is known and once again, these are just rumors…for now.   Other rumors state that the release date might not be until Feb. 24, 2012 which is the birthday of Steve Jobs.

All we can do right now is wait and see.

Samsung Galaxy S Phones Won’t Have Android Update

Earlier today, Samsung announced that its line of Galaxy S phones, which include some of the most popular phones on the market today, will not be receiving the latest Android update, Ice Cream Sandwich.

This means that about 10 million people will be out of luck and will have to be satisfied with the outdated, Android 2.3 also known as Gingerbread until they decide to drop more money on a brand new phone.

Many of the Galaxy S users are asking, “Why??”.  Well, Samsung says its hardware isn’t powerful enough to support Ice Cream Sandwich and its TouchWiz skin for Android. (TouchWiz is the extra layer of design Samsung adds to its Android phones)

This is awful news to many.  With this announcement, Samsung has made Google look pretty foolish when Google said that Android devices will start getting on a somewhat unified update cycle, similar to what iPhone and Windows Phone users enjoy now.

This is making Android’s popularity fall pretty fast as their updating “system” needs some major work.  It seems that the only way you are guaranteed the new Ice Cream Sandwich is if you purchase the new Galaxy Nexus phone otherwise you will be waiting weeks, months, or forever before Samsung decides that it’s time for your phone to be updated.

Like I said, this is causing Android’s ranking to fall to both Apple and Microsoft.  Look at Microsoft, every single Windows Phone is eligible for the latest version of  Windows Phone 7, even if the phone was released more than a year ago.

Google needs to get it together and figure out a way to keep its customers around or they will end up with little to no customers at all.

5 Last Minute Christmas Gift Ideas

Christmas is quickly approaching with only two shopping days left, leaving many people running around in desperate search of the “perfect” Christmas gift for their family or friends.  Are you in the same situation? Well fear no more, this is a list of 5 last minute Christmas gift ideas that many have purchased this holiday season.

1. Toys – New apps on both the Android and Apple market can lead to some new “toy” ideas.  One of these is the Griffin Helo TC ($39.99).  This is an inexpensive gadget that will fly for about eight minutes on a single charge and is robust enough for you not to worry about the odd crash landing.  There are many other gadgets like this one out there and they are all very popular this holiday season.

2. Cameras – Although smartphones are getting very close to taking over the camera industry, a dedicated device has the ability to do a lot more for you and your photo taking skills.  There are many brands to choose from (Olympus, Canon, Nikon…etc) as well as different types of picture taking cameras (SLR and DSLR).  This gives you a wide range of options and customizations to choose from.  Some popular cameras this year are the Olympus Pen E-P3, the Canon T3i, and other cameras such as the Nikon Coolpix S6100.

3. Headphones - This is an obvious one.  Headphones in today’s society is a “must have”.  Just like cameras, there are many different brands of headphones that are all equally as popular as the other.  Some popular headphones are the Beats by Dre, as well as Bose headphones.  Of course there are many other brands in the cheaper range such as Skullcandy, Sony, and Philips.

4. Cases - All of the above gadgets are great, but they deserve some sort of protection so you can actually get your money’s worth out of them. Brunswick England’s $55, hand-stitched Kindle case, for example, offers a pleasing balance between quality and price. If you want to go the whole hog, however, Mulberry and many more will swaddle your iPad or BlackBerry in almost any material you care to imagine.

5. Video Games – This should be a given for any child/teen out there today.  Most likely, they own some sort of gaming console (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii) and will be wanting the latest game to enjoy.  There are thousands of games to choose from but some of the more popular games and accessories this holiday season include: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Xbox 360′s Kinect, PlayStation 3′s Move, Battlefield 3, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

Consumer Electronics Show 2012: Trends To Watch Out For

All across the globe, electronic/technology companies are preparing themselves for CES (Comsumer Electronics Show) 2012, which takes place during the second week of January at the Las Vegas Convention Center.  Although Microsoft disclosed its plans to end its participation in CES starting next year, this year’s show should hold some promising insights to what’s ahead in the world of electronics.

During an interview with FORBES Wednesday, Accenture‘s Kumu Puri, a senior executive with the consulting firm’s consumer electronics practice in San Francisco, laid out what she thinks will be the five big themes from the 2012 edition of the show.  Microsoft will of course hold a big role this year.  Apple will be casting a big shadow over the event although it will not be participating this year.

So here they are, Puri’s 5 trends to keep a look out for at this year’s CES show:

  1. Ultrabooks: PC makers are expected to role out 20-40 new versions of the incredibly thin notebooks.  Puri thinks pricing will start in the $800 to $1,000 range, but quickly scale down from there.
  2. Tablets/Smartphones: As everyone could have guessed, we will be seeing a lot more mobile devices this year, including new Android based tablets and smartphones.  We should be expecting to see more support for mobile payments and location-based services on these devices.
  3. Connected Devices: Puri expects to see innovation in connected cars, for instance, with new features for Internet radio, and in-car apps targeting safety issues. There will be more Internet-enabled kitchen appliances. Also big again this year will be connected televisions. She thinks some of those services are maturing, and should improve over previous attempts at TV-based Web offerings that received an indifferent consumer reception.
  4. Windows 8: Coming back to Microsoft, the company is expected to launch its new operating system at some point in 2012.  Everyone is just asking how much of it they will be showing off at CES.  Also likely to show up at CES: a variety of new Windows Phone-based mobile devices.
  5. Digital Health: Puri thinks there will be an increased focus on health care at the show, with developments in three areas. One of those is the increased adoption of tablets in hospitals and doctors offices for recording data and other purposes. A second focus will be cloud-based solutions for storing, archiving, accessing and retrieving medical records. And the third will be an increased number of consumer medical devices, some apps running on tablets and phones, others dedicated gizmos for monitoring things like glucose levels and blood pressure.

Next-Gen iPod is A Bracelet??

Apple may be secretly developing wearable iPods that offer full support for voice commands using the company’s Siri software.  The New York Times released more info on the suspected project earlier today.

The iPod seems like it will be replacing the iPod Nano and Shuffle.  Reports say that it is a curved glass iPod which will wrap around the wrist.

We’re even imagining deeper Siri integration where a user might be able to ask their iPod how far they have run or what their current heart rate is.

Apple iPad 3 Set to Release in February

According to a Citi analyst, Apple is prepping a next-generation iPad (probably called the iPad 3)  for a February release.

The new device would most likely be close to the same as the iPad 2  but include Apple’s high-resolution retina display technology found on the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, said analyst Richard Gardner in a research note first reported on by Business Insider and PCMag.

Gardner reportedly said that “several sources” told him that Apple could launch the iPad 3 as early as February, which would put its debut ahead of the first two generations of Apple’s tablet.

Apple’s iPhone 4 and 4S have what is classified as a retina display, with a resolution of 960 x 640 resolution, and a 326 ppi. Any display with a ppi of 300 or greater is said be so dense that pixels are indistinguishable from each other to the human eye at a distance of about 10 to 12 inches — and thus, those displays can be dubbed retina displays.

Other tablets have already been made with higher resolution screens by Apple rivals but nothing close to a retina display tablet has surfaced yet (Samsung is working on one though).

Siri For Android? New Cluzee App Makes it Possible

Recently, a new app emerged from the Android market making the iPhone 4S’s “Siri” possible to run on Android powered smartphones.  Of course it’s not the same exact thing as Siri but a “clone” of the app has been made specifically designed for Android.

The app is called Cluzee and has been deemed  a “talking” intelligent virtual personal digital assistant that uses voice recognition, voice synthesis, personal analytics, smart filters and machine learning technologies.

“People are drowning in information overload,” said Ashish Patwa, CEO of Tronton. “We don’t need all of the information available, all of the time. We just need the right information at the right time, which Cluzee intelligently provides, making us more productive.

Cluzee provides the user with services like day planning, a health planner, personalized restaurant and retail recommendations, a trip planner, social media monitoring, and a daily briefing of personalized digital information.  Cluzee is supposed to “talk” to the user as well as respond to their commands.

So far, Android owners are reporting force closings, the inability to understand many questions and other problems plaguing the launch.  So it seems that this app might need some work before it can be considered a strong opponent to Siri.
