Sony Gets Hacked Again

Sony has recently locked down tens of thousands of accounts for its PlayStation Network (PSN), Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) and the Sony Entertainment Network (SEN), after detecting large amounts of sign-in attempts using different combinations of passwords and IDs.

The company said on Wednesday that the tests of various user ID and password combinations had mostly failed, meaning “it is likely the data came from another source”, rather than from Sony’s networks. However, around 93,000 attempts succeeded, and Sony has now “temporarily locked these accounts”.

“Only a small fraction of these 93,000 accounts showed additional activity prior to being locked. We are currently reviewing those accounts for unauthorized access, and will provide more updates as we have them,” Sony chief information security officer Philip Reitinger wrote in a blog post.

The company also stated that if you have a credit card associated with your PSN account, you are safe and your card is not at risk.

PlayStation Prices Falling Rapidly

Due to a desperate attempt to regain sales, Sony has now lowered the prices on their PlayStation products.

Resulting from the massive hacking (75 million accounts hacked) on PlayStation’s network a while ago, Sony’s sales have fallen dramatically.  Sony is now hoping to regain these sales by dropping their prices for their PlayStation product(s).  Starting on Tuesday, the 160GB version will fall from $299 to $249 (Prices in different countries will also drop to 249 euros and 24,980 yen) and the 320GB version will fall from $349 to $299.

These changes in price will take immediate effect in Europe but Japan will have to wait until August 18th.

Playstation 3 owners are in luck…

On Wednesday, September 1st, Sony announced the .release of their new music and video streaming service called Qriocity in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom this fall.

This new service will be available through Playstation 3’s, portable mp3 players, and other devices that can get internet. As the video service was already launched this April in the U.S. it will offer many films from many different companies.  No pricing has been listed so far but this is definitely something to look forward to in the future for PS3 owners.  Not only that, but I am sure that this is getting Apple mad because of the itunes competition.
